SkiBound Team Profiles
Name: Chris Powell
Position: Hotels Supervisor
My SkiBound experience:
At the wrong side of 25 I decided to take a career change and fancied doing a season, as this was prior to everything being on the internet I found an advert for First Choice/SkiBound that focused on working in the Alps during the summer season. I thought why not and attended an interview, which was very relaxed and gave a great insight in what seasons are all about. Having been successful I was asked if I would be interested in starting ASAP as a Bar person.
What happened next?:
I arrived in France at the start of June and started working in the Hotel Gai Soleil, La Clusaz as a Bar Person/GA, throughout the season (June until the end of October) I worked in many hotels throughout the Alps in different roles, GA/KP/NP/Commis Chef and even spent a few months as a handyperson at the Chateau du Molay situated in Normandy. After this brief spell of working in the Alps and enjoying the summer skiing in Tignes, white water rafting and generally enjoying myself I was basically hooked. My first winter season back in 2001 was as a hotel manager and since then I have worked in chalets, hotels, many different resorts and I am now the Hotels Supervisor responsible for the day to day management of the SkiBound units here in France and nipping back to the UK to assist with interviewing.
Was it the right decision to make having had a good job, mortgage and being 29 - most definitely otherwise I would not be here now, writing this whilst looking at the mountains and the first snow of autumn.
Name: Andy Burns
Position: Overseas Manager - Brighton
My SkiBound experience:
Whilst I was happy with what I was doing, I just needed a change! After leaving University, I had spent a number of years working my way up to a reasonable management position of a group of companies in London. It was going well but I just needed a break. I had already been on a few great ski holidays but wanted more...
After trawling over what felt like hundreds of web sites, I made what turned out to be the best choice, applying on-line for a job with First Choice and SkiBound. I remember being really impressed with the interview process and left with lots of information and eventually, an offer of a Hotel Managers position in France.
What happened next?:
I already had catering and management experience, but the company had an intensive training course which gave me a great understanding of what was to come during the season ahead. Before I knew it, I was in resort with a great team of staff around me, patently waiting for the first coach of guests. I will never forget the great times both a work around the hotel, in the kitchen (getting in the way!) and helping Gemma behind the bar and of course having some amazing times on the hill.
I only planned on doing one season, but that was 7 years ago! At the end of the winter, I just did not want to go back to the UK way of life, so I applied for some summer work. I was accepted as a Holiday Rep for Sovereign (part of the group) in Portugal and ended up over the years working in various positions around Europe. My heart was always in Ski, so following good summers work, I was always able to return to the French Alps, working in resorts from Valloire to Tignes, and my favourite, Les Menuires!
My passion for skiing has not gone away, but after 7 years of moving around I have finally settled down back in the UK. I have been able to use the skills and knowledge gained overseas back in the main office helping our staff and guest get the most out of great ski holidays around the world.
Name: Duncan Wilding
Position: North American Product/Operations Manager - Brighton
My SkiBound experience:
After a short spell of a football career in lower leagues of English football the opportunity came along to work for a student travel company at World Cup 1998 in Paris, so I was off! From this unmissable opportunity to move out of sport and into travel my life turned into the jet set lifestyle people think travel is! I moved on to work as a rep and football coach in Spain and Italy for the next six month before being offered the chance to spend the winter repping in the southern French Alps and across the border in Italy. This is where the love of snow began!
Mid winter I returned to the UK as a Product Manager for European sports tours and spend the next two years in the UK and Europe with the chance to still get on the snow during winters. My time came to return back to overseas life and anther two years were spent as a resort manager in the Summer on the beaches of L'Escala and Winters up in the mountains of Andorra in Soldeu & El Tarter. With girlfriend in tow time came to move back to the UK working for one of my old directors at a new company to build up a non ski programme and bring my resort experience to a student ski company that predominantly works in North America.
What happened next?:
At the end of one usually hectic season of flying between USA, Italy, Spain and living in the UK I was approached to join SkiBound to run the North American programme. Brilliant, a chance to focus in and take responsibility on one area and region that I have a genuine passion for and believe that the product is superior anything in Europe for schools! I'm fortunate to have a very efficient colleague that works for me on the North American product and also colleagues that work on the European product and operations.
